Man United 0-1 Arsenal: Missed Opportunities Provide a Title Lifeline!

Published by CM22ENT on

Two stalwarts of the Premier League era collided for a final time this season, in what simply put was an integral title shaping encounter. Arsenal travelled to Manchester, determined to reclaim top spot momentarily after Manchester City’s comprehensive victory against Fulham to kick off this weekend’s escapades.

A further weakened Manchester United side trudged into Old Trafford, with nothing but pride at stake through league placement and sweet revenge. For Erik ten Hag especially, it was easy to recall the events of their reverse fixture at the Emirates, only left to ponder how different his sides fortunes would’ve been if Alejandro Garnacho’s controversially offside goal was given. Was it to be the same level of pandemonium come full time for Mikel Arteta in contrast to September’s triumph?

Both outfits tenderly stepped into the initial stages with Arsenal acclimatising quickest. United themselves had moments where they showed potential to threaten The Gunners. Whispers more than shouts. In fact at times, Mikel Arteta’s side may have sabotaged themselves given the slapdash nature of some of their passes. On multiple first half occasions, North London’s reds dodged self inflicted wounds.

As they refocused and looked to occupy space in and around the opposition box, it would be an in form Leandro Trossard who opened floodgates and converted his fourth goal in five appearances. Safe to say, a collection of slow reactions defensively costed Manchester United yet again. A shot to the heart that clearly discombobulated Old Trafford’s occupiers. Unsettled, and lacking the imaginative sense to really cause any problems in attacking areas.

Trossard sinks the Red Devils with his swift movement to give Arsenal an important lead.

Arsenal’s failure to showcase their brilliance persisted in the second period, adding to Manchester United’s transitional threat down Garnacho’s left hand side especially. Fortuitously again it was the quality lacked in those scenarios which kept the game from adding one more onto the goal tally. Perhaps it was that missing touch around enemy territory that kept dreams alive in such a volatile title race.

As the storm violently announced itself, Paul Tierney’s final whistle just about signalled a beneficial conclusion for the less than scintillating Gunners and more misery at home for Erik ten Hag. Manchester United’s final two league games will cap off what has been a tumultuous campaign in more ways than one. Backs will be turned in quick time, as another summer will be closely analysed and scrutinised.

On a positive note, congratulations to United’s Women who achieved redemption by winning their first trophy, the Adobe FA Women’s Cup. In less than two weeks time, attention will return to Wembley when the Manchester Derby repeat concludes all club football until August.

Manchester United Women celebrate their first major honour.
