Crystal Palace 4-0 Man United: Largest Defeat At Selhurst Park Since 1972!
The Premier League season is transitioning into its ultimate climax where those at the very top battle for supremacy over all, and those tussling south are trying to desperately find an avenue of light which will lead to an extended stay in England’s top division. While Crystal Palace fans alike worried over weekly depreciations earlier on, the arrival of Oliver Glasner has transformed their fortunes, with a slight sense of optimism for what’s to come if they choose to look that far ahead.
The Austrian’s first 10 games had endured only 3 defeats, while featuring improved methods of execution. One key component to their upturn has been Jean-Philippe Mateta, providing 8 goals in this time frame. His 11 strikes overall amounted to more than his previous 3 campaigns combined as a Palace player.
Manchester United on the other hand, fresh off a disappointing draw against Burnley last time out were struck with two more casualties. Bruno Fernandes, who missed his first ever club game due to injury today and Harry Maguire, whose muscle injury will most likely cancel any more league appearances due to the expectation of him missing three weeks.
30 defensive combinations have most definitely stunted consistency levels among other things, but no excuses were to be relied upon in such an integral fixture. Especially with Erik ten Hag’s team spiralling down to 8th for the time being after Chelsea’s weekend triumph against West Ham.
The in form Eagles kicked off proceedings with a sense of confidence that could only be described by the aforementioned form and new identity developed. Selhurst Park as always was boisterous and that only soared after Michael Olise’s solo goal. Originating from a throw in, he skillfully ghosted past the experience of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, before striking gold from just inside the area. The lack of closing down after those two players were bypassed was rather puzzling to say the least, but don’t let that discredit the Frenchman’s je ne sais quoi to give Glasner’s side a deserved lead.
As time elapsed, it became clear that the wingbacks of Tyrick Mitchell and Daniel Muñoz were causing major problems for a Manchester United side who haven’t defended well or as a collective in wide area’s all season. In fact, Olise may have secured the match ball if fortunes favoured him more.
Nonetheless, Crystal Palace’s persistence would pay off once again in the form of a blistering strike by Jean-Philippe Mateta, beating Andre Onana at his near post in some fashion! Regardless of the controversy behind the away side’s disallowed goal after Rasmus Højlund contested for the ball against Dean Henderson, their overall performance reflected reality. Lifeless souls representing a football club with a never say die history. How the mighty have fallen.
Rain rigorously poured (figuratively) as those travelling fans had to accept the magnitude of this detestable display. Two further goals less than 10 minutes apart from Tyrick Mitchell and a double for Olise sealed Manchester United’s dark fate. Most losses EVER in a Premier League season (13), and clinging on to European football by a weakened thread.
Crystal Palace completed the double and enjoyed their largest victory against Manchester United since December of 1972. It was somewhat symbolic of the away supporters who were peacefully deafening after full time. All the United players could do was apologise and observe in shame. No glory glory for those in white and red as the ever-present chant suggests.
